What’s more fun than eating great cheeses, tasting great wines and beers and sharing them with your friends? Nothing! I’m living the dream!

How I got into cheese

Back in the early 90s, I was told I needed to cut out cow’s milk from my diet. Ack!! Since the majority of cheese readily available in those days was from cow’s milk, that began my search for goat and sheep alternatives wherever I went. Over the years family and friends joined me on countless trips to cheese shops, cheese classes and seminars, cheese festivals, farms and creameries all over the country and on trips abroad.

I knew I wanted to make my living in the cheese world, and many happy hours were spent in “researching” cheese. For a time I even raised goats and tried my hand at milking and making my own cheese.

With limited local opportunities to buy all the new-found delectables I had discovered in my travels, the idea of opening a small artisan cheese shop was hatched. Fast forward to 2012 and thanks to my amazing staff, we have brought hundreds of unique and delicious cheeses and other specialty products to the hungry people of Northern Nevada.

One of the things I love about this industry and the world of cheeses is that there is always something new to learn. The American Cheese Society has developed a comprehensive exam (akin to the sommelier exam) for cheese professionals. It’s a very difficult exam that many do not pass, but I am pleased to say, I did! I am a proud Certified Cheese Professional, one of only 3 CCPs in Nevada. I continue to expand my cheese knowledge every day and I love teaching others about great cheese!

“There is no sincerer love than the love for food.” George Bernard Shaw

Born in the Biggest Little City, I’m so ecstatic Reno is growing more and more into such a foodie town. I have worked in the service industry most of my life and food is, and has always been, my passion and a big part of my life.

I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Small Business & Entrepreneurship, and always knew food would be in my future. I sought out Wedge before it opened not only because I love cheese, but because I knew there was so much of it I wanted to learn.

Working at Wedge has taught me so much about food, not only cheese. I have the opportunity to meet and know all the people that have the love for cheese, charcuterie and specialty foods. I can say I love my job, love the people I work with and love being able to share my cheesy knowledge!

Cheesemonger, Beer & Wine Buyer

Want to know the best thing about being a cheesemonger? It’s when a guest tastes an amazing cheese for the first time, and his or her eyes close that brief moment. He or she is transported away from all the day’s problems. The world’s worries, just for that moment, have disintegrated, and he or she is experiencing bliss. The best thing about being a cheesemonger is the look that guest has on his or her face in that exact moment! Beyond cheesemongering, I’m a published poet, an underrated musician, and a dedicated craft beer nerd. I love going on adventures with my wife, Shanelle, and I love taking it easy with our cat, who calls herself Magnolia.

I came to Reno in April ’09 by way of Arizona, Texas, Canada, Germany, and grew up in the land of 10,000 lakes that is Minnesota. Since moving to the biggest little city, I have watched it grow and reinvent itself over a very short period of time into a wonderfully diverse, vibrant, and eclectic city that is full of many wonderful local businesses. I am so proud to call this community my home and to work with the best staff at Wedge!

When I’m not salivating over all the amazing items we sell in the shop, you can usually find me exploring the city and enjoying as many of the great local eating and drinking establishments as possible, traveling, catching a live show, face buried in a book, or probably baking something (usually bread) at home. I love culture and the arts, and Reno is a great place for both!
